1 Star buyer beware
The web page for this package states that it includes a “Spare BP-511 Battery.” Additionally it states: “Increase your shooting capacity with this powerful BP-511 Lithium-ion rechargeable battery.”
This package does NOT include a CANON BP-511 battery; it is a cheap Chinese knock-off. How cheap? Cameta offered to accept it in return and credit me $7.95 plus up to $2 for shipping.
The knock-off even states on the package that it “replaces Canon BP-511.” Calling it a BP-511 in any way in the web site in my opinion is blatant misrepresentation.
On top of that, the back of the knock-off says “replaces Canon BP-511 lithium ion rechargeable battery pack.” It does not say anywhere on the package that this is itself a lithium ion battery, just that it replaces a lithium ion battery.
Other vendors appear more straight forward; when selling a knock-off, they call it a “replacement for BP-511.”
Why would anyone with a $1000 to $2000 camera use an $8 battery which may do who knows what to the electronics? And some knock-off batteries are known to cause fires, etc.
The person on the Cameta customer service desk was very polite. She argued, nicely, that the word “spare” in the web page was a signal that it wasn’t Canon. Spare means extra to me, not knock-off. She said they do not carry Canon. She had no answer when I told her the package contained a Canon camera case.
I asked to return the entire package but they would not pay return shipping which probably would cost me $15. Why should I pay shipping to return what I believe is a misrepresented product? Why should I have $30 shipping invested (to here and back to there) to receive a $59 refund when it is Cameta which misrepresented the product?
Being blunt, I ordered the package for two items: the Canon case, which is as advertised, and the BP-511 battery. The rest, to me, is fluff to fill the box. Without a real Canon battery, it is overpriced fluff. In Cameta’s case, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
As soon as I found what I had been sent by Cameta, I immediately purchased (directly from Amazon) a real BP-511 battery ($40).
I exercised the Amazon A-Z guarantee. After considerable effort via email by Amazon to educate me on shipping policy boilerplate (they do not refund shipping or pay for return shipping), I called customer service and Amazon resolved the matter to my satisfaction. Score one for Amazon.
Concurrently I filed a complaint with the New York City Better Business Bureau. To date, almost three weeks out, Cameta has not responded.
Bottom line, watch what you order from this firm. Perhaps call and ask the particulars first. As for me, there are too many options out there (IE: B&H Photo) to use Cameta again and I will always try to purchase from Amazon directly, if possible.
3 Stars Canon accessory pack
With the single exception of the tripod, this is a good package. The camera bag is high quality Canon; the battery and usb card reader of good quality, the tripod is junk. It is a piece of plastic and in my opinion adds to the cost of shipping this package without adding any value to it. A set of filters incorporated into the package in lieu of this cheap tripod would make this package a much better value.
5 Stars Canon Accessory Kit – Digital Rebel
Great value. The CF reader was a great bonus that allows uploading of pictures far faster than with the camera. Case is great for keeping all sorts of stuff.
